Sara Heinämaa is Professor at the University of Jyväskylä's Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, specializing in phenomenology, philosophy of art, and ethics. Her research bridges classical phenomenology with contemporary issues in feminist theory, existentialism, and value philosophy. Heinämaa's current projects include Academy of Finland-funded research on 'Marginalization and Experience: A Phenomenological Analysis of Normality and Abnormality' (2017-2022). Her work examines how phenomenological methods can address social exclusion and normative structures. Recent publications explore Merleau-Ponty's aesthetics through poetry analysis, vocational life structures, and Simone de Beauvoir's philosophical legacy. Her 2024 works examine artistic-philosophical parallels and athletic performance as existential phenomena. Heinämaa serves on editorial boards for major phenomenology journals and leads the Nordic Society for Phenomenology. She regularly contributes to public philosophy discussions on gender equality in academic philosophy and phenomenology's relevance to contemporary social issues.
