Professor Gregor C. Leckebusch is a leading academic in meteorology and climatology at the University of Birmingham, holding the UK Met Office Joint Chair since 2022. He specializes in extreme weather events, climate variability, and their societal impacts. His research focuses on cyclones, storms, and precipitation extremes, with an emphasis on predictability across time scales. Leckebusch earned his PhD in Meteorology from the University of Cologne (Germany) and held roles at Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Leipzig before joining Birmingham in 2011. He directed the NERC DTP CENTA program (2019–2022) and leads teaching modules in applied meteorology and climatology at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His work bridges academia and industry, collaborating with re-insurance firms like SwissRe and CoreLogic. Over £13m in grants underpin his research, addressing topics such as typhoon parametric insurance, Atlantic hurricane variability, and post-tropical cyclones. He is an editorial board member of Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences and organizes high-impact conferences, including the European Windstorm Workshop (2019). Leckebusch’s awards include the Marie-Curie Fellowship (2012–2016) and the Gordon Manley Weather Prize (2008). His recent publications explore extreme rainfall in East Asia, tropical cyclone impacts, and seasonal forecasting techniques.
