Daniel P. Richards is an Associate Professor of English specializing in technical communication and rhetoric at Old Dominion University's College of Arts & Letters. His work focuses on environmental risk communication, user experience design, and writing pedagogy. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of South Florida (2013), and prior degrees from the University of Windsor.
Richards has secured over $1.2 million in research grants, including projects on wind energy siting solutions, flood risk calculators, and sea level rise visualization tools. He actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration through grants like the 'Improving Disciplinary Writing Action Project' and serves as past Chair of ACM SIGDOC (2019–2023).
His research explores posthumanist frameworks applied to environmental communication, emphasizing public engagement with climate risks. Notable projects include developing interactive geovisualizations for flood insurance mapping and analyzing 'flatten the curve' pandemic graphics. He has been recognized with awards including the 2021 Research Mentor Award and 2017 Teaching with Technology Award.
Richards teaches technical writing and rhetoric courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including business writing in ODU's MBA program. His pedagogical focus includes ideological transparency in education and innovative uses of multimedia storytelling for environmental advocacy.
