Dr. David Metzger is a Professor of English and Dean Emeritus of the Perry Honors College at Old Dominion University (ODU). He holds multiple advanced degrees including a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Missouri. His administrative roles include Dean of the Honors College (2008–2024), Interim Dean of Academic Enhancement, Chair of the English Department, and academic directorships in Jewish Studies and Writing Tutorial Services.

His research explores intersections of rhetoric with medieval studies, psychoanalysis, Jewish intellectual history, and pedagogical innovation. Key themes include the philosophy of argumentation, cross-cultural dialogue, and the rhetorical dimensions of science and ethics.
Publications: Over 40 articles and 4 authored/edited books, including Chasing Esther: Jewish Expressions of Cultural Difference (2006) and Medievalism and the Academy II (2000). Recent work engages with Socratic philosophy in contemporary theater and Lacanian theory in writing pedagogy.
