John McManus is a Professor of English and Director of the MFA Creative Writing Program at Old Dominion University (ODU). He holds degrees from Goucher College (B.A., 1999), Hollins University (M.A., 2001), and the University of Texas at Austin (M.F.A., 2004). His research focuses on creative writing and fiction, with notable works including Fox Tooth Heart (2015) and Bitter Milk (2005). McManus has received prestigious awards such as the Whiting Writers’ Award and a Fulbright Scholar Grant to South Africa (2014). His work explores themes of identity, place, and human complexity through innovative narrative techniques.
McManus has directed the ODU MFA program since 2015, fostering emerging writers through workshops and mentorship. His grants include a Creative Capital Literature Grant (2013–2017) supporting creative projects. He has presented at venues like the Texas Book Festival and the New School for Liberal Arts. His academic affiliations include roles in ODU’s College of Arts & Letters and participation in literary residencies worldwide, including Yaddo and the Camargo Foundation.
