Dr. Shannon L Macauley is an Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Department of Physiology. Her research focuses on understanding how brain metabolism alterations relate to Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology, sleep impairment, and vascular dysfunction. She employs rodent models, non-human primates, and human data to explore metabolic interventions targeting neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Macauley completed her BA in Biology/Psychology at Middlebury College, PhD in Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine, and postdoctoral training in Internal Medicine and Neurology at Washington University. She leads the Macauley Lab, which investigates pharmacological/non-pharmacological therapies for Alzheimer's and lysosomal storage disorders. Key recent work includes studies on KATP channels' role in amyloid-β pathology, sleep disruption's impact on CSF amyloid, and ethanol's effects on Alzheimer's-related biomarkers in mice.
