Associate Professor Andrew Gardner is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle's School of Medicine and Public Health, and a clinical neuropsychologist with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNE LHD). He serves as Co-Director of the HNE LHD's Sport Concussion Clinic, is a member of the World Rugby Concussion working group, concussion consultant to Rugby Australia, and serves on the Australian Football League concussion scientific advisory group. His work focuses on sports concussion research and clinical management. His educational background includes a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology) from Macquarie University, Sydney, where his thesis received the prestigious Most Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology (USA), and a PhD from the University of Newcastle studying brain ageing in retired elite level collision sport athletes. He also holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from the University of New England. Professor Gardner's research spans the full spectrum of concussion, from injury prevention with tackle techniques to injury identification via video analysis, acute assessment through validation of measures, and evaluation of later life brain and mental health of former athletes. His work has a strong translational focus, aiming to advance knowledge and improve healthcare by generating evidence-informed data to advance policy development. His research has established strong collaborations with international experts from Harvard Medical School, Vanderbilt University, UCLA, and the University of Colorado. His extensive publication record shows a clear focus on sports concussion epidemiology, assessment tools like the SCAT5, tackle biomechanics, concussion disclosure behaviors, and long-term brain health outcomes in athletes. Recent work increasingly incorporates advanced technologies like instrumented mouthguards and computer vision for head impact monitoring and analysis. His work bridges the gap between research and clinical application through the HNE LHD Sports Concussion Clinic, where he works at the interface of research and clinical practice. Professor Gardner has been instrumental in developing policy papers for Brain Injury Australia, Alzheimer's Australia (NSW), and Sports Medicine Australia, and has been involved in community engagement and sports concussion educational programs across Australia.
