Jan Baker serves as a Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design since 1980 and currently holds the Andrew Mellon Fellowship in the Costume and Textile Department at the RISD Museum. Her career spans international teaching engagements including Fulbright Scholarship at India's National Institute of Design and UNESCO workshops in Vietnam. Baker's research centers on interdisciplinary book arts with specialized expertise in: Letterpress printing and Asian book structures Papermaking integrated with textile design Visual poetry and non-Latin script manuscript studies Innovative travel journal documentation methods Her global explorations inform both artistic practice and pedagogy, with recent sabbatical work spanning London, Parma, Doha, Bhubaneswar, Hanoi, and Echizen. Baker's significant recognitions include: Fulbright Scholar designation Andrew Mellon Fellowship As an educator, she has mentored over 350 students, culminating in the 'Bookmark' exhibition celebrating 30 years of teaching. Her donated student works form a permanent collection at RISD Library. Baker actively teaches specialized workshops globally including 'Wild Books' at Shakerag and previously led programs at Haystack and PBI. Her studio practice uniquely integrates travel documentation with book arts, creating journals packed with drawings, lecture notes, photographs, and ephemera that serve as foundations for innovative book structures.
