Dr. Holger Thüs serves as Deputy Head of the Botany Department and Curator of Fungi (including lichen-forming taxa), Bryophytes, and Algae at the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart (STU). His research focuses on lichen ecology, evolution, and taxonomy, with emphasis on bioindication and conservation. He employs the Verrucariaceae family as a model system to study symbiotic interactions and environmental adaptations across extreme habitats. Research interests center on: Functional ecology of lichen symbioses Taxonomic revision of understudied fungal groups Conservation applications of bioindicators Evolutionary mechanisms in stress tolerance Biogeography of freshwater and extremophile lichens Publications demonstrate strong thematic focus on: Taxonomic revisions of Verrucariaceae and Myxomycetes Functional trait analysis in environmental monitoring Biodiversity documentation in glacial, tropical, and freshwater ecosystems Museum collection-based research and digitization advocacy He leads the EU FunDive project enhancing fungal conservation prioritization and contributes to interdisciplinary studies on climate adaptation mechanisms in lichens. Current field investigations include species delimitation in wart lichens and MAA (mycosporin-like amino acids) function analysis.
