Professor Edouard Metzger is a distinguished researcher in marine biogeochemistry at the University of Angers' Faculty of Sciences, where he leads research within the Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géosciences (LPG). Appointed as Professor in September 2021, he has established himself as a leading expert in sediment biogeochemistry, trace metal cycling, and foraminifera ecology. His research spans multiple institutions through collaborations with SFR QUASAV and various national and international projects.
Dr. Metzger's research interests focus on diagenetic processes and trace metal mobility in sedimentary environments, particularly studying speciation of metals like Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb under variable biogeochemical conditions. He has pioneered development of advanced analytical techniques including diffusive equilibrium in thin-film methods and microelectrode voltammetry for high-resolution spatial and temporal measurements. His work extends to anthropized coastal environments, alternative metabolisms of foraminifera (particularly denitrification capabilities), and developing paleoenvironmental proxies through coupling sediment geochemistry with foraminiferal ecology.
Analysis of his recent publications (2020-2025) reveals a strong emphasis on sediment biogeochemistry in estuarine environments, particularly the Loire estuary. His work frequently addresses hypoxia/anoxia events, metal cycling (especially manganese and iron), and the ecological responses of benthic organisms. The research spans analytical chemistry, marine biology, and environmental science, often employing innovative two-dimensional mapping techniques to understand complex biogeochemical processes at microscale levels.
Dr. Metzger's scientific contributions include:
- Extensive supervision of doctoral students across diverse topics in marine biogeochemistry
- Leadership of major research projects including REWRITE (Horizon 2020), CABESTAN, TROPECOS, and REBELRED
- Development of novel analytical methodologies for sediment porewater analysis
- Significant contributions to understanding foraminiferal ecology and biogeochemical cycling
His research program is well-funded through multiple national and European grants, supporting both fundamental research and applied environmental studies. Dr. Metzger maintains active collaborations with researchers across France, Europe, and internationally, particularly in Brazil and the United States. His laboratory provides students with opportunities to work on cutting-edge environmental research using advanced analytical techniques while addressing pressing ecological questions related to coastal zone management and climate change impacts.
