Dr. Nicholas Jones serves as Adjunct Professor in Trent University's Department of Biology and Research Scientist at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. He directs the River and Stream Ecology Lab, conducting applied research on aquatic ecosystems since 2004.
Education includes:
- PhD in Ecology, University of Alberta
- BSc in Pure and Applied Ecology, University of Guelph
- Fish & Wildlife Technology, Sir Sandford Fleming College
Research interests focus on river and stream ecology through multidisciplinary approaches. Key areas include:
- Characterization of thermal/hydrological regimes in stream networks
- Ecological connections between lakes and rivers
- Resource subsidies and system productivity
- Hydropower dam impacts since 2004
- Biota life history relationships with environmental factors
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on aquatic ecosystems (2003-2016), with themes including river connectivity, spatial ecology, regulated river systems, and northern aquatic habitats. Recent works examine tributary effects, resource subsidies, and hydropeaking impacts.
Lab resources support field sampling and analytical work, including specialized equipment for fish processing, aging, and stable isotope analysis. The team provides collaborative support through ecological expertise and technical resources.
