Dr. William Bowerman is a Professor and former Chair (2011-2023) in the Department of Environmental Science & Technology at the University of Maryland's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Previously, he held faculty positions at Clemson University (1999-2011) in environmental toxicology and forestry. His research focuses on contaminant effects on wildlife, particularly bald eagles as bioindicators in the Great Lakes Basin, examining organochlorines, heavy metals, and emerging pollutants. He also investigates African vulture conservation through One Health frameworks, toxicant-disease interfaces, and ecosystem management.
- Ph.D. in Fisheries & Wildlife – Environmental Toxicology, Michigan State University (1993)
- M.A. in Biology, Northern Michigan University (1991)
- B.A. in Biology, Western Michigan University (1985)
Dr. Bowerman directs the University of Maryland's Joint Analytical Services Laboratory, supporting environmental research. His work spans continents, including projects in South Africa, India, and Peru, addressing issues like avian vacuolar myelinopathy, dam removal impacts, and pesticide toxicity in amphibians. He has advised numerous graduate students across institutions and maintains active involvement in professional organizations such as the Ecological Society of America and the Raptor Research Foundation.
Key research trends from his 15 most recent publications include:
