Joseph Larkin is an Assistant Professor at Boston University. His research focuses on understanding microbial strategies in biofilms and electrophysiological interactions. He investigates how bacteria engineer their environments through biofilm formation and signaling, using time-lapse imaging and custom experimental devices. His work integrates biophysics, microbiology, and engineering to explore emergent properties of living matter. Key research areas include bacterial biofilm dynamics, electrophysiology-driven behavior, and the development of novel electrical imaging technologies. His group uses CMOS sensor arrays and label-free techniques to study microbial communities at microscale resolutions. Recent publications highlight advancements in electrical capacitance imaging, biofilm modeling, and semiconductor-biofilm hybrid systems. These studies emphasize interdisciplinary approaches bridging biology and engineering. His lab is located in CILSE (Room 605C) and SCI (Room 215) at Boston University.
