Susann S. Lusnia is an Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Tulane University, holding the Suzanne & Stephen Weiss Presidential Fellow for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. She has served as Department Chair (2018-2021), Executive Director of the Center for Engaged Learning & Teaching (2014-2018), and Assistant Director for Classroom Engagement (2011-2014). Her expertise lies in Roman material culture, imperial politics, and monumental architecture, particularly under the Severan Dynasty. Lusnia earned a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Cincinnati (1998) and has held teaching posts at Tulane since 2000, previously at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (Rome) and Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Her research explores Severan Rome’s architectural propaganda, urban topography, and the intersection of art/architecture with political power. Notable publications include Creating Severan Rome (2014) and articles on the Septizodium, Severan Arch, and Julia Domna’s coinage. Awards include the Rome Prize Fellowship (1996) and multiple grants from the American Philosophical Society and Archaeological Institute of America. Lusnia teaches courses on Roman art, archaeology, and urban history, including Monuments of Ancient Rome and Severan Sculpture in Context . She actively promotes engaged learning through Tulane’s Center for Engaged Learning & Teaching and has directed the Classical Summer School at the American Academy in Rome (2011-2013).
