Dr. Jayne Knight is a Senior Lecturer in Classics at the University of Tasmania, affiliated with the School of Humanities and History and Classics department. She specializes in Roman cultural history, Latin literature, and ancient emotions. Her research examines the role of emotions in Roman politics and leadership, with a forthcoming book on anger in the late Republic and early Principate. She has held leadership roles including Assistant Dean for Distinctiveness and Innovation (2022-2025) and coordinates the Classics major and Humanities Honours program.
Education: BA/MA in Classics (University of Florida, USA), PhD in Classics (University of British Columbia, Canada). Teaching focuses on Latin, ancient Greek, and Roman history, recognized by awards such as the CALE Student Focus award (2022) and three Teaching Merit Certificates.
Research interests include Roman emotional culture, Latin literature, and Cicero/Seneca studies. Notable projects explore Machiavelli’s use of Roman emotional theory and asynchronous student engagement strategies. Funded projects include UTAS grants and ARC funding for emotional history studies.
Awards include Vice-Chancellor’s Team Citation (2019), highlighting her collaborative teaching approaches. Advises students on topics like ancient sexualities, Romano-Italic relations, and cultural violence in literature.
