Zhang Tong is a professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Architecture, Southeast University, where he also serves as dean. His research focuses on the theory and methods of sustainable urban and rural design, green architectural design, and the role of regionalism and place in architectural environments amid globalization.

Recent research includes the National Key Research and Development Program under the Ministry of Science and Technology's 13th Five-Year Plan, NSFC key projects, and EU URBAN-NET collaborations.
