Ayşe Zarakol is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Cambridge, holding a permanent post since 2013 and currently at Grade 12. She is also a Fellow in Politics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Her work bridges international relations theory, historical sociology, and sovereignty studies, with a focus on Eastern world orders and Turkey's comparative politics. She maintains active roles as Associate Editor for International Organization (2022-present) and previously for the Journal of Global Security Studies (2016-2020).

Her research explores historical international relations, sovereignty dynamics, and the evolution of global orders. Her 2022 book Before the West has won multiple awards including the SSHA Allan Sharlin Best Book Prize and the ISA Theory Section Best Book Prize. Her seminal 2011 work After Defeat remains the most cited book in its series with over 700 citations.
Scientific awards include the 2024 ISA John G. Ruggie Best Book Prize, 2023 Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science (First in IR/Political Science), and 2023 British Academy Knowledge Frontiers Grant. Her publications appear in top journals like International Organization (most prestigious in IR) and American Political Science Review, with significant impact on syllabi and policy discussions.
