Ayşe Zarakol is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Cambridge and a Politics Fellow at Emmanuel College. Her work bridges historical sociology and international relations, focusing on East-West dynamics, world order, sovereignty, rising/declining powers, and comparative Turkish politics. She has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Copenhagen, Australian National University, and Free University Berlin.
- Education: BA in Political Science and Classical Studies from Middlebury College; MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Zarakol is a leading scholar in international relations, with a focus on historical and global perspectives. Her research explores how non-Western powers integrate into international systems after defeat, re-theorizes sovereignty and decline through Eurasian frameworks, and examines periods of global disorder. She contributes to journals like International Organization and International Affairs, and engages in public policy writing for outlets such as the London Review of Books and Foreign Policy.
Her accolades include the Koç University Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science (2023) and multiple book prizes for Before the West: the Rise and Fall of Eastern World Orders (2022). She has received grants from the British Academy, Council on Foreign Relations, European Research Council, and the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
