Ayşe Zarakol is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Cambridge, with a fellowship at Emmanuel College. Her work bridges historical sociology and IR, focusing on East-West dynamics, global order, and Turkey’s comparative position.
- Education: BA in Political Science and Classical Studies from Middlebury College, MA and PhD in Political Science from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Her research interrogates sovereignty, modernity, and status hierarchies in world politics. Recent projects include the critically acclaimed Before the West: The Rise and Fall of Eastern World Orders (2022), which re-centers global history on (Eur)asia. Her articles appear in journals like American Political Science Review and International Organization, often addressing decolonial approaches and non-Western agency.

She currently leads a British Academy Knowledge Frontiers grant on historical periods of disorder, collaborates with PONARS Eurasia, and serves as Associate Editor at International Organization.
