Ayşe Zarakol serves as Professor of International Relations (Grade 12) at the University of Cambridge since October 2023, following progression from Reader (2017-2021) and Lecturer (2013-2017) positions. She concurrently holds a Fellowship in Politics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge since 2013 and serves as Associate Editor for International Organization (2022-2027).
Her research integrates International relations theory with Historical international relations to examine Sovereignty and International orders through comparative analysis of Turkish politics and East-West relations. She pioneers interdisciplinary approaches combining Historical sociology with global political dynamics, particularly in reconstructing historical international systems and their contemporary implications.
Dr. Zarakol's accolades include:
- 2024 ISA John G. Ruggie Best Book Prize
- 2023 Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science (first in IR/Political Science)
- Multiple 2023 best book prizes from Social Science History Association, International Studies Association, and American Political Science Association
- British Academy Knowledge Frontiers Grant (2023) for 'Pathways from Disorder to Order'
- Australian National University Coral Bell Fellowship (2022)
She leads the British Academy-funded project on historical-theoretical intersections in global order while maintaining editorial leadership at International Organization. Her academic service extends to the PONARS Eurasia Network and competitive fellowships at Nobel Institute and CRASSH.
