Zach Blas is an artist, filmmaker, and writer whose practice spans moving image, computation, theory, performance, and science fiction. From 2015 to 2021, he served as a Lecturer in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. His work critically engages with digital technologies, surveillance systems, and biopolitical control mechanisms, interrogating their intersections with gender, power, and resistance.
Blas holds a PhD in Literature from Duke University and an MFA in Design Media Arts from UCLA. His research explores the materiality of AI, biometric recognition, predictive policing, and internet infrastructure, often through immersive installations like THE DOORS (2019), CONTRA-INTERNET: JUBILEE 2033 (2018), and im here to learn so :)))))) (2017), which critique technological oppression and imagine queer futures.
His practice has been exhibited globally at institutions such as Tate Modern, LACMA, and the Gwangju Biennale. Key works like Sanctum (2018) merge BDSM aesthetics with security apparatuses to expose surveillance’s eroticized violence. Blas’s writings appear in Artforum, e-flux journal, and co-edited anthologies like Informatics of Domination (forthcoming, Duke University Press).
His work is collected by major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art. Awards include a Creative Capital Award (Emerging Fields) and support from the UK’s Arts & Humanities Research Council. Blas currently maintains an active research agenda at the intersection of art, technology, and critical theory.
