Dr. Yikai Wang is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Economics at the University of Essex, since 2019 with tenure obtained in 2021. He holds a PhD from the University of Zurich (2014, summa cum laude), and prior roles include Assistant Professor at the University of Oslo (2014–2019). His research focuses on macro labour markets, public finance, and political economy, with publications in top journals like the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics and the Journal of the European Economic Association.

Research interests emphasize policy-relevant questions such as labor market adaptations during crises (e.g., pandemic impacts), fiscal frameworks in aging societies, and political-economic drivers of growth in China. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical evidence, addressing challenges like intergenerational equity in pension systems and macroeconomic policy responses to demographic shifts.
Current supervision includes PhD candidates Devisri and Razika Belhabib. Previously advised Zhexin Feng (PhD, 2023) and Ziyi Huang (MRes, 2021). His office is 3.322 at the Colchester Campus, with academic support hours on Fridays 11:30–13:30 by appointment.
