Dr. Lukas Altermatt is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Essex, appointed since July 2020. His previous appointments include Visiting Research Fellow positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds a PhD in Economics (2019), an MSc in Business and Economics (2014), and a BA in Business and Economics (2012), all from the University of Basel.
Altermatt's research focuses on macroeconomics, monetary policy, banking, and financial markets. His work explores themes such as liquidity management, systemic risk, and monetary frameworks in diverse economic contexts. His publications consistently address the interplay between financial institutions, asset pricing, and policy interventions.
Recent articles (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong emphasis on monetary theory, bank stability, and asset markets. Trends include examinations of unconventional monetary policy, equilibrium dynamics in banking systems, and the role of collateral in financial transactions. This body of work contributes significantly to understanding financial fragility in modern economies.
Altermatt actively contributes to academic service through departmental roles and maintains research collaborations with international institutions. His office is located at 5B.110 in the Colchester Campus, where he provides academic support by appointment.
