Assoc Prof Yi Yaolin is an Associate Professor at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He served as Deputy Co-Director of the Surbana Jurong-NTU Corporate Laboratory (2022–2024). His academic journey includes a BEng, MEng, and PhD from Southeast University (2004–2013), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta (2013–2016) and a visiting scholar stint at the University of Cambridge (2009–2010).
His research focuses on geotechnical engineering, sustainable construction materials, and waste treatment. Key areas include sustainable geo-materials, geo-environmental engineering, and interdisciplinary approaches to enhance sustainability in civil engineering. His group explores topics such as CO2 sequestration using industrial byproducts, marine geotechnology durability, and hazardous waste utilization.
Prof Yi currently serves on editorial boards of Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (ASCE) and Geotechnical Engineering (ICE), and chairs the ISSMGE Technical Committee on Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering (TC307). He is also a member of ASCE Geo-Institute committees and Singapore Standards Council Technical Committees.
His work emphasizes circular economy principles, leveraging industry by-products for construction applications while addressing environmental challenges like soil remediation and coastal protection. Research outputs highlight innovations in carbon capture, durable coastal materials, and waste-to-resource conversion.
