Dr. Christopher Beckett is a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Programme Manager at the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He holds an adjunct research fellowship at the University of Western Australia. His research focuses on unsaturated soils under extreme conditions, hydrophobic materials, earthen construction, and international collaborations across multiple disciplines.
Dr. Beckett earned a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Durham University (2011) and a first-class MEng in Civil Engineering from the same institution (2008). He chairs Standards Australia Committee BD-083 (Australian Earth Building) and serves on RILEM TC 274 (earth building) and ISSMGE Technical Committees 106 (Unsaturated Soils) and 221 (Tailings and Mine Waste). His work spans projects in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, and Australia, emphasizing sustainability and resilience.
His research interests include geotechnical characterization of agricultural soils, centrifugal modeling of soil behavior, and disaster risk management. He has received awards such as the University of Edinburgh Research Impact Prize (2025) and chairs international conferences like the Second RILEM International Conference on Earthen Construction (2024).
- Education:
- PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, Durham University (2011)
- MEng (hons) in Civil Engineering, Durham University (2008)
Recent publications emphasize hydrophobic soils, cyclone resilience, and historical construction techniques. His projects include collaborations with climatologists, archaeologists, and architects to address global infrastructure challenges. Key initiatives include the BResilient project in Madagascar and research on rammed earth incorporating recycled materials.
