معرفی
Professor Charles Augarde is the Head of the Department of Engineering at Durham University and holds the rank of Professor of Civil Engineering. He previously worked in industry as a Chartered Engineer before pursuing academic roles at Oxford University and the University of Westminster. His research focuses on numerical modeling in geotechnical and structural engineering, particularly using finite element, meshless, and scaled boundary methods. He is also a leading expert in unsaturated soil mechanics and sustainable earthen construction.
Education: BEng in Engineering from Lancaster University (1986), MSc in Structural Engineering from Heriot-Watt University (1993), DPhil (PhD) in Engineering Science from Oxford University (1997).
Research Interests: Computational Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Meshless Methods, Finite Elements, Computational Fracture, Earthen Construction, Unsaturated Soil Mechanics.
Contributions: Editor for journals like Acta Geotechnica and Theoretical & Applied Fracture Mechanics. Past President of the UK Association for Computational Mechanics (2016–2019), and member of ISSMGE committees. Recognized as a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Administrative Roles: Deputy Head (Postgraduate) in Durham’s Science Faculty, Undergraduate Admissions Tutor, and Director of Postgraduate Research. Active in curriculum development, including teaching nonlinear solid mechanics and civil design courses.
Key Projects: Development of the Material Point Method (MPM) for geotechnical modeling, studies on rammed earth construction durability, and offshore energy foundation innovations.
