Dr. Xuexin Liu is a Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Spelman College, where she has served since 1995. She specializes in Japanese and Chinese languages and cultures, with a focus on cross-cultural communication.
- Ph.D. in Japanese Linguistics and Literature from Nara Women’s University
- M.A. in Language Education from Nara University of Education
- B.A. from East China Normal University
Her research explores:
- Comparative semantics/pragmatics between Japanese and Chinese
- Language transfer in second language acquisition
- Bilingual lexicology and code-switching
- Translation theories with cultural appreciation
- Language contact and historical borrowing
- Business cultural studies in East Asia
Recent publications analyze lexical borrowing, conceptual structures, and politeness strategies, appearing in journals like Studies in Linguistics and Literature. She received the Spelman College Presidential Faculty Award for Scholarly Achievement.
Dr. Liu directs Spelman's Summer Study Program in Japan, advises the Japan Club, and manages exchange initiatives with Japanese universities. Her teaching spans elementary to advanced Japanese courses, fulfilling requirements for Asia Studies and International Studies minors.
