Aiqi Liu is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Professional and Clinical Practice at the University of West Florida's Department of History and Philosophy. He specializes in the history of economy, finance, and money in East Asia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a focus on Manchuria's financial systems and their role in shaping state-society relations and pre-WWII militarism.
Education: Ph.D. (2022), M.A. (2012) in History from the University of Iowa; B.A. in Chinese Literature from Sun Yat-sen University (2010). Additional studies include a Japan Foundation Fellowship at the University of Tokyo (2019-2020) and a Nippon Foundation Fellowship at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (2016-2017).
Research interests include public finance, international economics, monetary policies, state-society relations, and digital humanities. His current book project, *The Money Deluge*, examines the financial origins of militarism in China and Japan. He has conducted extensive archival research in Japan and China, supported by grants such as the UAB Core Faculty Fellowship (2022-2024) and multiple international fellowships.
Teaching includes courses on Asian history, world history, and U.S. history. He speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese, and reads classical Chinese and Japanese. Professional memberships include the Japan Association for Asian Studies and the Social Science History Association.
