Luolin LIU is an Associate Professor (non-tenure-track) at the Center for Japanese Language, Waseda University, and a part-time Lecturer at Tokyo Woman's Christian University. Her research focuses on Japanese language education, particularly phonetics and phonology, with an emphasis on the influence of learners' mother tongue and dialects on pronunciation acquisition.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. (2023) and Master's (2017) in Japanese Applied Linguistics from Waseda University, and a B.A. in Greek Language and Literature from Shanghai International Studies University (2011).
Dr. LIU's research interests center on Japanese phonetics, phonology, and pronunciation teaching, with specific attention to speech sound acquisition, the use of mother tongue in instruction, and the impact of Chinese dialects (particularly Southwestern Mandarin) on learning Japanese sounds. Her work bridges theoretical linguistics and practical language pedagogy.
Her recent publications and presentations reveal a consistent focus on the perceptual and productive challenges of Japanese phonemes (especially /n/ and /r/) for Chinese speakers, and the development of teaching methodologies that leverage learners' native language knowledge.
Dr. LIU has received research grants for:
- Japanese pronunciation instruction in Chinese universities (2023-2024)
- Chinese teachers' perception of pronunciation education (2023-2024)
- Using L1 in teaching Japanese pronunciation (2022-2023)
