Takako Toda is Professor at Waseda University's Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics, Faculty of International Research and Education, where she has established herself as a leading expert in Japanese language education with specialization in phonetics and pronunciation instruction. Holding a Ph.D. from Australian National University, she bridges theoretical linguistics with practical teaching methodologies, with particular emphasis on technology-enhanced language learning.
Dr. Toda completed her education at Australian National University from 1985-1997 in Linguistics. Her academic journey has positioned her at the forefront of Japanese language education research, with numerous publications and innovative teaching approaches that address real challenges faced by Japanese language learners worldwide.
Her research focuses on Linguistics, Phonetics, and Japanese Language Education, with particular expertise in pronunciation acquisition, phonetic awareness development, and digital learning environments. Dr. Toda's work challenges traditional assumptions about adult language learners' capacity for native-like pronunciation and has developed evidence-based teaching strategies that incorporate shadowing techniques, online resources, and blended learning models.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a clear evolution from foundational phonetic research toward innovative digital learning solutions, culminating in the development of globally accessible MOOCs. Her work demonstrates how technology can effectively address pronunciation challenges while maintaining pedagogical rigor and cultural relevance in Japanese language instruction.

Her research has been supported by multiple Japan Society for the Promotion of Science grants, including the development of the "Japanese Pronunciation for Communication" course on edX which has enrolled over 75,000 students from 158 countries. She maintains active international collaborations with institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America.
She leads the Speech Communication Laboratory at Waseda University, which has developed influential teaching materials including the widely adopted "Shadowing Japanese Pronunciation Lessons" series. The laboratory's work has directly impacted Japanese language teaching methodologies worldwide, with former students establishing successful programs internationally, such as Liu Jiaqi's top-tier certified "Japanese Phonetics" course at Fudan University in Shanghai.
