Mariko Kondo is a Professor at Waseda University's School of International Liberal Studies, Faculty of International Research and Education. With extensive expertise in phonetics and second language acquisition, she has established herself as a leading researcher in cross-linguistic speech perception and production. Her academic journey includes foundational studies at Waseda University followed by advanced degrees in the UK, culminating in a Ph.D. in Linguistics (Phonetics) from the University of Edinburgh.
Her educational background demonstrates a strong foundation in both linguistic theory and practical phonetic analysis: BA in Literature (Waseda University), MA in Language and Literature in Education (Institute of Education, University of London), MA in Phonetics (University College London), and Ph.D. in Linguistics (Phonetics) (University of Edinburgh). This diverse academic path has equipped her with the theoretical and methodological expertise necessary for her current research.
Professor Kondo's research focuses primarily on phonetics, phonology, speech perception, language acquisition, and speech corpus development. Her work particularly examines how Japanese speakers perceive and produce English sounds, cross-linguistic transfer in speech perception, and the acoustic properties of Japanese and other languages. She has made significant contributions to understanding vowel length perception, consonant production, and the influence of L2 learning on L1 speech patterns. Her research often employs corpus-based methodologies and computational modeling to investigate speech phenomena.
Her 27 publications with 179 citations (h-index: 6) demonstrate a consistent research trajectory focused on Japanese-English cross-linguistic speech issues, expanding to include Vietnamese and other language pairs in recent years. The publications reveal a methodological shift toward computational modeling and corpus linguistics, with increasing attention to bilingual speech phenomena and the interaction between L1 and L2 speech systems. Her work bridges theoretical phonology with practical applications for language teaching.
Professor Kondo holds significant roles in the academic community, including serving as Associate Editor for Phonetica and active participation in the Phonetic Society of Japan's committees, including the 100th Anniversary Commemoration Committee. She has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Phonetic Society of Japan and chaired the International Exchange Committee.
She is deeply involved in collaborative research projects, most notably the J-AESOP Corpus (Japanese-English Bilingual Speech Corpus), which represents a major contribution to the field of second language speech research. Her work connects theoretical linguistics with practical applications in language teaching and speech technology development.
