Xiong (Bill) Yu, PhD, is the Department Chair and Opal J. and Richard A. Vanderhoof Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering. His research focuses on multiscale multiphysics processes in geosystems, smart infrastructure technologies, and interdisciplinary innovations for sustainability and resilience. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from Purdue University (2003) and additional master's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.
Key research areas include sensor innovations, smart materials, and computational modeling for energy and environmental challenges. Notable awards include the 2020 John S. Diekhoff Award nomination for mentoring and 2020 CSE faculty research award. His work spans geotechnical engineering, infrastructure resilience, and renewable energy integration.
Recent publications emphasize smart infrastructure materials (e.g., thermochromic films, photocatalytic pavement), geothermal systems, and computational models for soil behavior and energy efficiency. Collaborations address environmental sustainability, traffic safety, and urban air quality improvement.
