معرفی
Douglas Cortes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University, holding this position since August 2011. His academic journey began at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned his B.S.C.E., M.S.C.E., and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Cortes contributes to the university through teaching and research in geotechnical engineering.
Education
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010
- M.S.C.E. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2008
- B.S.C.E. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006
Research Interests
Dr. Cortes' research program is centered on innovative solutions in geotechnical engineering for sustainable infrastructure. Key areas include:
- Investigating heat-induced changes in soils with polymeric admixtures to enhance durability and performance.
- Characterizing and managing reclaimed asphalt pavements for resource recovery.
- Improving geotechnical aspects of pavements through unconventional structures.
- Developing mechanistic soil-cement mixture designs that minimize cement usage while maximizing strength.
- Designing smart backfills for geothermal energy systems to improve efficiency.
- Creating bioinspired geosensors for advanced soil monitoring.
Publication Trends
Over the past decade, Dr. Cortes has published in high-impact journals on topics spanning geotechnical engineering, materials science, and energy applications. His work shows a clear trajectory from fundamental studies on thermal conductivity in sediments (2009) to recent computational analyses of bio-inspired geoprobes (2020). A recurring theme is the application of geotechnical principles to sustainable energy and construction, particularly in geothermal systems and recycled materials.
Professional Activities
Prior to joining NMSU, Dr. Cortes worked as a Senior Staff Engineer at Geosyntec Consultants and as an Instructor at Georgia Tech. His industry experience complements his academic role, bringing practical insights to his research and teaching. No information on awards, grants, or student advising is provided in the current text.
