Xinping Zhang, B.Med., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, affiliated with the Center for Musculoskeletal Research and the UR Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of skeletal repair in bone loss due to trauma, tumors, and grafts. He holds a B.Med. from Shanghai Medical University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Rochester (1999).
Key research interests include periosteum-mediated repair, mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, and tissue engineering strategies for bone regeneration. Notable projects involve engineering vascularized periosteum mimetics, analyzing osteogenesis-angiogenesis interfaces via multiphoton imaging, and overcoming fibrotic responses in allograft repair.
- Awards: MTF J.R. Neff Award (2008), Orthopaedic Research Society New Investigator Recognition Award (2005), Travel Fellowship Award (2002).
- Lab Team: Includes postdocs (e.g., Xiaojie Xing), research staff (Samantha Mill, Jessica Ritz), and alumni contributors like Chen Jiang and Sharif Siddiqui.
- Grants: Funded by NIH, NYSTEM, and foundations.
His lab develops biomimetic scaffolds, investigates stem cell signaling pathways, and employs advanced imaging techniques to understand repair dynamics. Current collaborations aim to translate findings into clinical solutions for large bone defects.
