Zhidao Xia is a Senior Lecturer in Regenerative Medicine at Swansea University Medical School. His research focuses on skeletal tissue regeneration, particularly bone and cartilage repair using biomaterials, stem cells, and controlled drug delivery. He specializes in developing biodegradable materials and studying their biocompatibility and degradation mechanisms. His work also addresses adverse tissue reactions to medical implants and the development of innovative biocompatible biomaterials. Xia collaborates with industries to commercialize a patent-pending 3D-printed biodegradable bone graft substitute.
Key areas of expertise include regenerative medicine, biomaterials, stem cell technology, 3D printing/biofabrication, and translational research. He holds grants such as the 'Three-dimensional Bioprinting Using Functionalised Self-Assembly Nanopeptide on the Regeneration Cartilage and Related Tissue' (2018–2020, £124,737) and 'Microencapsulation and controlled delivery' (2014–2015, £94,376). He teaches modules like Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and Emerging Therapies and Complex Patients.
Xia's publications span biomaterials, orthopaedics, and nanomedicine, with a focus on osteogenesis, nanoparticle toxicity, and scaffold fabrication. He has supervised research projects including 'Manufacturing osteogenically enhanced hydroxyapatite/calcium carbonate scaffolds' and 'Development of synthetic bone allografts using tissue engineering.'
