Xiaochao Ma is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and a member of the Center for Pharmacogenetics. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (2003), followed by postdoctoral training at NIH (2003–2008) and a tenure at the University of Kansas Medical Center before joining Pitt in 2013.
His research focuses on drug metabolism, drug-induced liver injury, and precision medicine approaches to address safety issues of therapeutics. Key areas include understanding mechanisms of xenobiotic toxicity, roles of nuclear receptors like PXR and CAR, and exploring natural products for hepatoprotection. He has pioneered studies on ABCG2 transporters in porphyria and mitochondrial dysfunction in drug toxicity.
Recent publications emphasize translational research bridging basic pharmacology with clinical applications, particularly in antiretrovirals and antitubercular drugs. His work has been recognized with multiple NIH awards and the ASPET Junior Investigator Award (2018).
Dr. Ma’s lab collaborates widely, focusing on precision medicine strategies for individualized drug safety. He is actively involved in mentoring graduate students and has received funding from NIH grants to support his research programs.
