Dr. Christian A Fernandez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and a member of the Center for Pharmacogenetics. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and completed postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. His research focuses on advancing cancer treatment through pharmacogenomic approaches, including investigating drug-induced immunogenicity, liver injury, and targeted therapies for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Key areas include understanding mechanisms of biologic-induced immune responses, asparaginase toxicity in pediatric leukemias, and personalized capecitabine therapy for metastatic breast cancer.
Research projects emphasize translational pharmacology, with a focus on identifying genetic risk factors (e.g., PNPLA3 variants linked to liver toxicity) and developing strategies to mitigate adverse drug reactions. His work bridges mechanistic studies in preclinical models with clinical applications, aiming to improve therapeutic efficacy and patient outcomes through precision medicine.
Notable awards include the 2021 Brenneman Scholar Award and 2020 ASPET Early Career Award. He has published extensively on topics like asparaginase hypersensitivity mechanisms, NFAT signaling pathways, and nanocarrier drug delivery systems. Current projects involve NFAT inhibition to reduce immunogenicity and pharmacogenetic strategies for tailored anti-cancer therapies.
