Winston C. Thompson is a Professor of Philosophy of Education and (by courtesy) Philosophy at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Education and Human Ecology. He directs the Center for Ethics and Human Values, a university-wide initiative. Thompson holds the William H. And Laceryjette V. Castro Professorship in Interprofessional Education and oversees the Philosophy and History of Education Section in the Department of Educational Studies.
He earned his PhD (with distinction) in Philosophy and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, following roles at NYU and the University of New Hampshire. His research focuses on ethical and political dimensions of education, including justice, equity, and social/political dilemmas in educational policy. Current projects explore the intersection of education and politics, emphasizing race and immigration.
Thompson’s scholarship spans over 50 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, including works on moral education, epistemic justice, and civic education. His recent publications address systemic vices in academia, the ethics of discipline, and curriculum censorship. He collaborates with institutions like Harvard University’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics.
He advises doctoral students and leads grants in areas like educational ethics and policy. Thompson’s work bridges philosophy, policy, and practice, advocating for socially just educational systems. His lab and research team focus on interdisciplinary projects at the Center for Ethics and Human Values, fostering collaborations across Ohio State’s campuses.
