Arthur I. Applbaum is the Adams Professor of Political Leadership and Democratic Values at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), where he co-directs the Undergraduate Fellowship Program and teaches core courses in political ethics and political philosophy. He previously served as Acting Director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and directed HKS's graduate fellowship program from 1990–2009.
His research focuses on political legitimacy, professional ethics, and moral role obligations in public life. Notable works include *Ethics for Adversaries* (1999) and articles addressing the ethics of executioners, spies, and democratic intervention. He chairs the ethics board of a stem cell research foundation and advises on shareholder responsibility.
Applbaum holds degrees from Princeton University (A.B.) and Harvard (M.P.P., Ph.D.). He has held fellowships at Princeton’s Center for Human Values and served as a Fulbright Scholar in Jerusalem. His teaching includes a popular freshman seminar exploring Montaigne’s influence on political thought, which inspired a teen novel about political philosophy.
