William Lauenroth is the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd ’35 Professor at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). His research focuses on dryland ecosystems, particularly grasslands and sagebrush communities, with an emphasis on plant population dynamics, ecohydrology, and climate change impacts. He employs simulation modeling to explore ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales. Currently, his work centers on big sagebrush plant communities in western North America.
Education: B.S. from Humboldt State University, M.S. from North Dakota State University, and Ph.D. from Colorado State University. His expertise spans carbon sequestration, climate science, and ecosystem ecology.
Teaching and Mentoring: He has taught at Colorado State University and the University of Wyoming, offering courses on vegetation ecology, ecosystem science, and environmental policy. His mentoring style emphasizes student responsibility, guiding doctoral and master’s students through structured research processes. He expects master’s theses to include publishable manuscripts and doctoral dissertations to comprise 3-4 manuscripts.
Research Contributions: Over 84 publications since 1991, including studies on sagebrush regeneration, climate-driven ecohydrological changes, and the effects of grazing and land use. Recent work examines wildfire probability, sagebrush range expansion, and water balance dynamics in drylands.
Professional Activities: Co-developed the STEPWAT2 model for dryland ecosystems. His environmental policy course integrates fieldwork in the Canary Islands with EU policy analysis.
