Dr. Indy Burke is the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Dean of the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) and a Professor of Ecosystem Ecology. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Middlebury College and a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Wyoming. Prior to YSE, she served as Dean of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming. Her research focuses on carbon and nitrogen cycling in dryland ecosystems, examining the impacts of land use management, climatic variability, and regional changes.
- Education:
- B.S. in Biology, Middlebury College
- Ph.D. in Botany, University of Wyoming
Her research interests span carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, conservation ecology, and sustainable land management. She investigates how dryland ecosystems respond to environmental stressors such as drought, land use changes, and climate variability, with a focus on biogeochemical cycles and plant-soil interactions.
Dr. Burke has secured over $20 million in grants for interdisciplinary research and advised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral associates. She has held leadership roles on the EPA Science Advisory Board, National Research Council committees, and editorial boards of top scientific journals. Her expertise bridges academia and policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration to address global environmental challenges.
She leads YSE’s academic and research programs, fostering innovation in environmental education and solutions-oriented scholarship. Her work also includes ecosystem restoration strategies and natural resource management policies.
