Jesse Nippert is a University Distinguished Professor in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University. His research focuses on grassland ecophysiology, ecosystem responses to global change, and woody plant dynamics in prairie systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Colorado State University and leads the EcoPhys Lab, which investigates plant-environment interactions using stable isotope techniques and field experiments.
Research interests center on physiological responses of plants to environmental variability, particularly water availability and climate extremes. Current projects examine:
- Microclimate effects on tallgrass prairie species
- Woody encroachment mechanisms at Konza Prairie
- Physiological basis of grass-tree coexistence in global savannas
Publications demonstrate strong emphasis on disturbance ecology (fire/grazing), vegetation-climate feedbacks, and ecohydrological processes. Collaborative work frequently integrates field data with ecosystem modeling.
