Timothy Dickson, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on grassland ecology, restoration ecology, and the impacts of management practices on ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and pollinator conservation. He leads the Grassland Ecology Lab, exploring topics like how grazing by cattle or bison affects milkweed and monarch butterfly populations. His teaching spans Restoration Ecology, General Biology, and Statistics.
Dr. Dickson has received the E. Lucy Braun Award (2003) for contributions to ecological research. He is actively involved in sustainability consultations and collaborates on long-term studies examining fire regimes, grazing impacts, and plant community dynamics in tallgrass prairies. His work bridges ecological theory with applied conservation strategies, emphasizing biodiversity preservation in managed landscapes.
Key research themes include understanding how environmental heterogeneity and disturbance regimes influence grassland productivity and species composition. He has published extensively on topics like the effects of fire, mowing, and grazing on soil microbiomes, plant diversity, and bioenergy potential. His lab offers opportunities for students to engage in field-based ecological research.
