William C. Mattison III is the Wilsey Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, with a joint appointment in the Department of Theology and as Senior Advisor for Theological Formation in the Alliance for Catholic Education. He holds a Ph.D. from Notre Dame and has held roles including Associate Dean and Interim Dean at The Catholic University of America’s School of Theology & Religious Studies. His research focuses on Moral Theology, Virtue Ethics, and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, with a particular emphasis on integrating Scripture and ethics.
Prof. Mattison’s academic journey includes a Fulbright Fellowship in Fribourg, Switzerland, and teaching stints at Notre Dame, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Catholic University of America. He currently leads the Moreau First Year Experience, redesigning core curricula for Notre Dame undergraduates. His publications explore virtue, grace, and Thomistic moral theology, alongside ethical frameworks rooted in Scripture.
He has contributed to academic leadership through roles in the Ethics and Catholic Theology Group and co-founding the New Wine, New Wineskins symposium for Catholic moral theologians. His work bridges theological scholarship with practical theological formation in education and ministry.
