Nicholas Lombardo, OP is an Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Notre Dame's Department of Theology (College of Arts and Letters). Previously, he held academic positions at The Catholic University of America from 2011–2024, including roles as Area Director of Historical and Systematic Theology. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (2010) and habilitation from the University of Fribourg (2014). His research focuses on Trinitarian theology, theological anthropology, and Aquinas' philosophy of emotion. Notable works include The Father’s Will (Oxford UP, 2013) and The Logic of Desire (CUA Press, 2011), which won the John Templeton Award for Theological Promise.
Education: B.A. Philosophy (Brown University, 1997), theological degrees (Dominican House of Studies, 2005), Ph.D. (Cambridge, 2010), and habilitation (Fribourg, 2014). Academic honors include a 2019 Fulbright Scholar appointment and membership in the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. His research spans historical theology, scriptural exegesis, and the intersection of faith with modern science.
Key research areas: Trinitarian theology (processions/monarchy), theological anthropology (emotions/virtue), patristic Christology (crucifixion narratives), and science-theology dialogue (evolutionary genetics). He has lectured globally, including at Peking University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and institutions across Europe/Asia. Teaching includes courses on theology of scripture, trinitarian doctrine, and Aquinas' moral philosophy.
