Wen Shen is an Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine, affiliated with the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the Department of Radiation Oncology. She leads the Shen Lab, which is part of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center and the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, a collaboration among Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her research is also linked to the New York Genome Center.
- Ph.D. in Immunology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Bachelor’s in Physiology, Nanjing University
- Postdoctoral Training, Columbia University
Dr. Shen's research centers on the genetic, epigenetic, and immunological roles of PTEN, a critical tumor suppressor gene. Her lab investigates how PTEN maintains genome integrity, regulates chromatin architecture, and influences tumor-immune crosstalk. Using patient-derived organoids and genetically engineered mouse models, her team studies cancer evolution and develops personalized immunotherapies. Key areas include PTEN signaling, chromosome stability, mitochondrial metabolism, and cancer immunoediting.
The lab's recent publications reveal a deep exploration of PTEN’s role across DNA replication, chromosome segregation, DNA repair, and metabolic regulation. These studies consistently link genomic instability with immune evasion, laying the foundation for precision oncology. Themes include nuclear PTEN, epigenetic control, and preclinical modeling of tumor-immune dynamics.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Co-discovery of 'nuclear PTEN' (2007)
- Irma T. Hirschl Career Scientist Award (2016)
Dr. Shen mentors a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral fellows, research technicians, and students, and collaborates across cancer biology, immunology, and clinical oncology. Her lab receives support from institutional and national grants focused on cancer mechanisms and therapy development. She actively participates in translational research through the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program and the Radiation Therapy Preclinical Core.
The Shen Lab includes members engaged in tumor modeling, organoid culture, immunogenomics, and radiation biology. Key initiatives involve PTEN mutant models, cancer vaccines, and mechanistic studies of radiation-induced immune responses. The lab fosters collaboration with clinicians and researchers across the Weill Cornell ecosystem.
