Wellington Hsu

Wellington Hsu is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Neurological Surgery and serves as the Director of Research for Orthopaedic Surgery.

• Clinical Focus: Minimally invasive spinal disorder treatments via image navigation, percutaneous instrumentation placement, and robotic surgery
• Research Leadership: Directs collaborations between CRN research scientists and clinicians across joint replacement, sports medicine, and hand surgery

Research Interests:
The Hsu Laboratory develops translatable biomaterials for bone regeneration, including:

• Nanotechnology-based synthetic matrices
• Osteoinductive 3D-printable natural materials
• Advanced allograft material substitutes for spinal fusion

His work with the Stupp group employs bioactive self-assembling peptide amphiphile nanofiber matrices for low-dose growth factor delivery, while collaborations with Dimension Inx explore 3D-printed composite scaffolds combining allograft bone and synthetic hydroxyapatite particles.
