Erin Hsu is a Research Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University and Assistant Director of the Center for Regenerative Nanomedicine, focusing on translational bone regeneration technologies with emphasis on spine fusion applications.
Education:
- PhD (2007), UCLA
Research Interests: Her work pioneers biomaterials for bone healing through stem cell therapies, nanotechnology-based synthetic matrices, and 3D-printable osteoinductive materials. She investigates environmental toxin inhibition (e.g., cigarette smoke) on bone formation and develops dual-function materials that simultaneously promote regeneration while blocking chemical damage.
Laboratory: Co-leading the Hsu Laboratory with orthopaedic surgeon Wellington Hsu, she drives innovation in pre-clinical spine fusion models using bioactive peptide amphiphile nanofibers for ultra-low-dose growth factor delivery and mesenchymal stem cell enhancement, alongside 3D-printed hyperelastic scaffolds combining demineralized bone matrix with synthetic hydroxyapatite.
