Lajos Vékás is a prominent legal scholar and academic leader, serving as a Professor of Hungarian and Comparative Private Law at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest. He has held significant administrative roles, including Rector of ELTE (1990–1993) and Vice-President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2014). As Chairman of the Hungarian Codification Commission (1999–2012), he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s civil code.
His academic career began at ELTE, where he earned his law degree. He later held visiting professorships, notably at Heidelberg University, and received four honorary doctorates from prestigious institutions including the Universities of Hamburg, Heidelberg, Vienna, and Cluj. His research focuses on contract law, codification, private international law, and arbitration.
His publications, including commentaries on the Hungarian Civil Code and analyses of legal codification trends, reflect his deep engagement with comparative legal systems. Awards include the Széchenyi Prize (2004), Hungary’s highest civilian honor. He has also contributed to international legal frameworks through his work with the Max Planck Institute and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowships.
Prof. Vékás’s academic leadership extends to institutional governance, having served in top administrative roles that advanced educational and research excellence. His scholarly work bridges historical legal traditions and modern codification challenges, particularly in post-socialist legal systems.
