Vivian Cumbo is a Researcher affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies headquartered at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. She holds a BSc in Microbiology (Hons) and Marine Biology from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and completed her PhD in Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University. Her postdoctoral research at California State University, Northridge, focused on the impacts of climate change on coral early-life stages under the supervision of Dr. Peter Edmunds.
Education:
- BSc (Microbiology) and Honours (Marine Biology), UNSW
- PhD in Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University (2006-2010), supervised by Dr. Andrew Baird, Dr. Madeleine van Oppen, and Prof. Terry Hughes
Research Interests: Vivian’s work centers on coral reef resilience in the face of climate change. Key areas include:
- Symbiotic relationships between corals and Symbiodinium spp./Chromera velia
- Effects of temperature, ocean acidification, and environmental stressors on coral larvae, recruits, and juveniles
- Multi-scale dynamics of reef ecosystems from population to macroevolutionary scales
- Adaptation mechanisms and reef resilience strategies
Labs/Teams: Active contributor to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to advance coral reef conservation science.
